Essential packing guide for the climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro


Travelling to Kilimanjaro involves both international travel and backpacking. In order to be safe and comfortable throughout your Mount Kilimanjaro climb, you are responsible for bringing the required, recommended and optional personal gear and equipment, we have put together listed below.

Mountain Equipment

  • 1 Sleeping Bag, warm, four seasons  
  • 1 Sleeping Pad/thermos rest, self-inflating or closed-cell foam  
  • 1 pair of Trekking Poles  
  • 1 Sleeping Bag Liner silk, for added warmth  
  • 1 Small Daypack, for you to carry your limited personal gear (rain jacket/pants/gloves)  
  • 1 Water Bladder, Camelback type goes inside day pack (get insulation if you can)  
  • 1 Bag (90 litres, not a ruc sac) (porter carries)  
  • 1 Day Sac (20-25 litres) (you carry) 
  • 1 Travel bag 80+ litres  
  • 1 Head lamp, with extra batteries  
  • 1 Sunglasses minimum category 3  

Compulsory Clothing

  • 1 Summit Jacket, synthetic or down  
  • 1 Summit Fleece *Pants high tech  
  • 1 Soft Jacket, fleece or soft-shell  
  • 1 Waterproof Jacket, breathable  
  • 1 Waterproof Pants, breathable (side-zipper recommended)  
  • 3 Long Sleeve Shirt, light-weight, moisture-wicking fabric  
  • 3 Short Sleeve Shirt, light-weight, moisture-wicking fabric  
  • 3 Hiking Light weight Pants for daily wear (convertible to shorts recommended)  
  • 1 Shorts (Optional) 

Footwear

  • 1 Hiking Boots: waterproof, good grips  
  • 1 Running/cross trainer for daily wear as long as there are good grips  
  • 5 light breathable Sock liners for daily wear  
  • 2 Wool (Marino ideally) over sock for summit night only or in tents  
  • 1 Gaiters, waterproof (optional) 

Underwear

  • 1 or 2 Long Underwear (moisture-wicking fabric recommended)  
  • 7 daily change of Underwear, briefs (moisture-wicking fabric recommended)
  • 2 to 4 Sport Bras (women) 

Handwear

  • 1 Summit Mitt extreme Gloves, warm  
  • 1 Glove Liners, thin, synthetic, worn under gloves for added warmth 

Toiletries, Hygiene etc

  • 1 Anti Bac wash  
  • 1 Roll on deodorant  
  • 1 Tooth Brush  
  • 1 Tooth paste  
  • 1 Small mouth wash 1  
  • Large Vaseline  
  • 1 Scholl Moisturiser  
  • 2 Water Bottle (Nalgene, 32 oz. recommended)  
  • 2 Towel, lightweight, quick-dry (optional)  
  • 1 Pee Bottle, to avoid leaving tent at night (highly recommended)  
  • 1 Diva or moon cup (highly recommended for women´s hygiene in case of menstruation) 
  • 2 Packs of baby wipes  
  • 1 Goggles (Optional ideal for people with sensitive eyes on summit descent)  
  • 1 Backpack Cover, waterproof (optional)  
  • 3 or 4 Stuff sacs to keep gear dry and separate (may be purchased in any outdoor shop) 

Other personal items

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50 or above, we recommend Clarins for moisture retention)  
  • Zinc for your lips Viper  
  • liquid gels  
  • Insect Repellent, containing DEET 
  • First Aid Kit (small)  
  • Snacks and Energybars, light-weight, high calorie, high energy   
  • Pencil and Notebook, miniature, for trip log (optional)  
  • Camera, with extra batteries (optional)

  • Solar charger for ipods /cameras/ phones/travel monkey adapter 
  • Treats be that sweets /biscuits  
  • Diary for logging thoughts (optional)  
  • Medication:  Diamox (10 tablets), Anti-Malaria Tablets, Arret/Maxilon for unset tummy  
  • Nurofen  
  • Broadspec Antibiotic - Augmenten Duo or Cipro (just in case)  
  • Migrarelief

Miscellaneous

  • Nasal spray  
  • small cough bottle if prone to coughs 2 1-1.5  
  • litre bottles Nalgene or Equiv  
  • cover for the platypus lining to prevent freezing
